Vijay Diwas celebrated on 16 December marks India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. The day commemorates the surrender of Pakistani forces in Dhaka, leading to the creation of Bangladesh. This day is celebrated to honor the bravery and valor of the Indian Armed Forces and to pay tribute to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives during the war.

93000 soldiers of Pakistani Army surrendered

On this day in 1971, the Pakistani Army surrendered after being badly defeated by India in a 13-day war. Pakistani Army Chief General AA Niazi Khan surrendered to the Indian Army along with 93,000 soldiers.

In fact, on December 16, 1971, the surrender agreement was signed between Lieutenant General Niazi (Lt. Gen A.K. Niazi) and Lieutenant General Arora (Lt. Gen Arora). Lieutenant General Niazi handed over his revolver to Lieutenant General Arora. The angry mob was intent on harming Lieutenant General Niazi, but the Indian Army showed kindness and ensured that no harm came to him.

The India-Pakistan war of 1971 holds a unique place in world history. This war changed the political geography of the world forever. This achievement of the Indian Armed Forces is famous all over the world and the stories of this war are a part of their curriculum for the armies of powerful countries of the world.

It is also called Bangladesh Liberation War. There was a significant conflict between East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (now Pakistan). The war emerged due to long-standing tensions between the two regions of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (now Pakistan), arising primarily from political, economic and cultural disparities.

India joined in support of the rights of the Bengali-speaking people. The Indian armed forces played a key role in assisting the Mukti Bahini (Bangladeshi freedom fighters) and eventually became involved in direct conflict with Pakistan. This resulted in the surrender of the Pakistani Army in Dhaka on December 16, 1971.

The outcome of the war was the creation of Bangladesh as an independent nation and a historic victory for the people of Bangladesh, giving them independence from Pakistan.
