The Supreme Court is expected to rule on petitions challenging the high court’s decision to reject the high court’s request to repeal the hijab prohibition at educational institutions in Karnataka.

The Supreme Court is anticipated to make its ruling before Justice Hemant Gupta leaves this week. After 10 days of hearings, a bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia reserved their judgement on the arguments on September 22.

A significant portion of the petitioners’ counsel contended during the Supreme Court hearing that allowing Muslim females to attend class while donning the headscarf will jeopardise their education since they quit attending lessons.

The state government’s decision prohibiting the wearing of clothing that disturbs equality, integrity, and public order at schools and universities was one of the many issues raised by the petitioners’ legal counsel throughout their arguments. A five-judge Constitution bench was another suggestion made by some proponents.

The high court dismissed the petitions brought by a group of Muslim students at the Government Pre-University Girls College in Udupi, Karnataka, on March 15 after finding that the hijab is not a necessary component of Islamic faith’s religious practise.

Some Muslim girls appealed to the high court against the state government’s directive from February 5, 2022. The high court’s decision has been contested in numerous requests sent to the top court.
