The data was given to Reuters by government and business officials. According to a senior government official, the shipments have been permitted mainly to Bangladesh, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Malaysia.
According to the official, India’s wheat exports fell to 1.13 million tonnes in May from a high of 1.46 million tonnes in April due to the embargo.
This summer, India’s wheat prices were at a record high due to the start of severe heat waves and a dramatic jump in world prices. The administration issued limitations on wheat exports on May 14 to preserve the country’s food security. Nevertheless, the export of this item will be permitted under certain circumstances.
India is the world’s second-largest wheat producer.
The shipments were made possible by letters of credit that had already been given and those to nations that had requested supplies to satisfy their food security requirements.
At least 1.7 million tonnes of wheat remained stacked up at several ports, according to three dealers with global trading businesses who spoke to Reuters.
According to these dealers, New Delhi is poised to approve exports of 8 million to 10 million tonnes or more this year, up from 7.2 million tonnes last year.
Meanwhile, a global trading firm’s New Delhi dealer told Reuters that the government needed to quickly grant export licenses since wheat at the ports was in loose shape and vulnerable to monsoon rains.
According to the dealer, the government restricted wheat exports to maintain food security, but the prohibition would be useless if rain damaged supplies.
The monsoon season in India began this month and will last through September.
