Coronavirus takes over the nation

India has reported around 33,750 new cases of the Coronavirus and the death of 123 patients has also been reported so far. The number of patients who have recovered from COVID is 10,846 which brings up the nation’s tally of active cases to 1,45,582. These are inclusive of the Omicron cases. 

The Union Ministry of Health has reported that the number of Omicron cases is 1700 and 639 people have recovered or discharged as of now. The state which has been leading the list with 510 cases is the state of Maharashtra and is closely followed by Delhi with 351 active cases of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus. 

All the states have imposed various restrictions to halt the spread of the highly-transmissible Omicron. The Union government has urged the states to act faster amidst the steep surge of Covid cases. Although the mortality rate is not that high, the rapid spread cannot be taken lightly. The nation is also gearing up for the vaccination of children which will begin from today. 

The government of West Bengal has announced fresh curbs in the state including the operation of shopping malls, cinema halls, and restaurants at only 50 percent capacity and to stay open till 10 pm only. Only the operation of essential services will be allowed between 10 pm to 5 am. Karnataka will implement tough rules to prevent the rapid spread of the disease. The night curfew will go on till January 7 and new curbs will be imposed.

The schools and colleges have been closed till January 12 in Haryana as the state has witnessed a spike in the cases. New restrictions have been put in place for 10 days to control the situation of COVID.  Delhi government has also taken stringent measures including the closing of two weekly markets in the North East area for violating the Covid guidelines issued by the government. Chief Minister Kejriwal has given a statement saying that most cases in the third wave are very mild and do not need hospitalization. He stated that there is nothing to panic over but Covid appropriate behavior including social distancing, mask-wearing in public places have to be followed strictly.

The state governments are also preparing hospital beds, medicines, oxygen plants, and faster vaccination drives in their respective states. 

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the chief of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said in his message on the New Year that the pandemic will only end this year if the world ends inequity together. He also stated that no nation is out of the woods from the Covid pandemic, but the world has better tools to prevent and treat Coronavirus. 

All the health institutions are urging people to stay inside as much as possible and to not take the Omicron lightly.
