The official COVID data suggests that the death toll of India has crossed 500,000 earlier this week making it the third nation in the world to cross the five-lakh mark reaching the grim milestone on Tuesday itself.

The only countries ahead of India are the United States of America with more than 9.1 lakh fatalities to Covid and Brazil with almost 6.3 lakh death fatalities due to the virus so far. Russia is the fourth highest nation as far as the casualties due to Coronavirus is concerned with 3.3 lakh deaths reported. Mexica is following Russia after logging 3.07 lakh deaths in the past two years of the pandemic.

The death toll of the nation went past the 5-lakh mark 217 days after crossing the four-lakh mark on July 1, 2020. It was also the longest time taken by the country to add 1 lakh fatalities to its tally indicating a decline in the number of deaths in months following the peak of the disastrous second wave. Around this time only, the vaccinations rose across the nation steadily, which helped the protection of the people.

The number of deaths kept on decreasing till the end of December last year after which the fatalities peaked again in the wake of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus which was highly transmissible and still has the nation in shackles. The seven-day average in January crossed 600 on Thursday. These figures are still low when compared to the devastating figures of the second wave that were peaking at 4000, and the numbers were peaking at 1176 in the first wave. So the deaths of the third wave have been comparatively lower so far.

The daily fatalities are yet to peak in this current surge and the death during the third wave is 0.16 per cent as compared to 1.36 per cent in the second wave and 1.42 per cent recorded during the first wave of the Coronavirus. Although the actual data of deaths in the nation is expected to be much higher than the recorded fatalities so far.

Several international studies that are based on various methods such as mathematical modelling, suggests that India has suffered the highest number of Covid deaths in the whole world. The nation has recorded 1,49,190 new cases on Thursday, which is down from 1,72,931 recorded on the previous day. Infections across most states have continued to decline. Cases in Kerala have gone down to 42,677 registering a decline. All the states that were reporting a slight surge in infections have witnessed a decrease on Thursday.
