Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a 100-day campaign inaugurated by the Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, on October 2, 2020, to safeguard the health and well-being of children by supplying clean tap water in schools and Anganwadi centers across the nation.
The Jal Jeevan Mission works to improve mothers’ and sisters’ socioeconomic status, health, and liberation from the age-old labor of collecting water for homes. The Mission is to give rural households greater comfort of living, pride, and dignity.
In 16 months, potable tap water has been made available to 8.47 lakh schools (82%) and 8.67 lakh Anganwadi centers (78%), allowing for the preparation of midday meals, handwashing, and toilet usage. In schools across the nation, 93 thousand rainwater collecting facilities and 1.08 lakh greywater reuse structures have been constructed.
In contrast to prior water supply programs, the government claims that Jal Jeevan Mission places more emphasis on providing water services than merely constructing water supply infrastructure. According to the Jal Jeevan Mission’s philosophy, “no one is left out,” every home, regardless of socioeconomic position, is provided with tap water.
