The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres said that the world eas facing the biggest global peace and security crisis in recent decades and called the declaration of Russia of the so-called independence of separatist areas in Eastern Ukraine a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine further accusing Russia of the perversion of the concept of peacekeeping. The UN secretary-general said this after Russia had ordered military troops into Eastern Europe to “keep the peace”. Guterres told the news reporters that when troops of one nation entered the territory of another nation without their consent, they were not impartial peacekeepers, rather they were not peacekeepers at all.

The President of Canada, Justin Trudeau also imposed new sanctions on Russia and said that Canada would be sending hundreds of new troops to Eastern Europe as a response to the deployment of the Russian forces into Ukraine. He further said that up to 460 additional Armed Forces from Canada were being sent to Latvia and the surrounding area to support NATO in the face of aggression shown by Russia. He also mentioned that Canada was taking several steps along with its allies to isolate Russia from the world financially.

The face-off between the West and the East has escalated dramatically on Tuesday with the lawmakers of Russia authorizing their President to use Russia’s military forces outside its nation and the President of the US, Joe Biden alongside its European allies slapping sanctions on Russian oligarchs and banks as part of their response. Both the leaders have signalled that much bigger confrontations lay ahead of them.

Vladimir Putin has not unleashed the 150,000 military troops that were amassed on three sides of Ukraine while President Biden has held back on the imposition of toughest sanctions on Russia because that could mean economic turmoil for their country but he said that he would go ahead with it if there is further aggression shown by Russia.
