As authorities arrived with bulldozers and a police escort to dismantle "illegal buildings," the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday began an anti-encroachment drive close to the ITO graveyard.
The official stated that approximately 50 illegal structures must be removed and that the drive may continue on Thursday. The official added that the action was taken in response to a High Court order. Civic officials claimed that before carrying out the action, encroachers were given the "required opportunity" to produce their ownership certificates.
Temporary and permanent illegal structures, kiosks, shanties etc will be demolished during the action," an MCD official told PTI.
According to the message the MCD's executive engineer for the central zone issued to the Delhi Police, the civic organisation has scheduled an encroachment removal activity from the public street behind the Times of India building in accordance with the High Court's directives.
These drills were conducted by the city authorities in May in places including Jahangirpuri, Shaheen Bagh, Madanpur Khadar, Lodhi Colony, and Tilak Nagar, among others. During the anti-encroachment drive, they encountered demonstrations and resistance from locals in various areas, notably Jahangirpuri.
