Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has appointed a corporate vice president as the business’s first chief information security officer (CISO).

Guy Rosen, who has been with Facebook since 2013 and most recently led the company’s product safety and integrity efforts, said in his new role that he “will continue to oversee and look across the breadth of safety & security risks that people who use our services, our company, and industry face” on Twitter.

Facebook has never had a CISO before. In October 2021, Facebook was rebranded as Meta Platforms, but its social networking app retained the moniker “Facebook.”

In a memo obtained by Reuters, Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said he had requested Rosen to take up the post. The decision was “another effort to elevate this security work in our DNA—and enhance our leadership and governance on security problems.”

Rosen will now be responsible for “overall safety and security around on-platform abuse and the security of our products, infrastructure, and corporate information—focused on both internal and external dangers,” according to Zuckerberg.

Alex Stamos, Facebook’s previous top security officer, left the company in 2018.

After playing a critical but mostly behind-the-scenes role in igniting the social media company’s spectacular growth for the past few years, Meta veteran Javier Olivan was recently revealed as the company’s chief operating officer.

Sheryl Sandberg, who announced her departure from Meta last Wednesday, will be replaced by the Spaniard.

Meta is making a move as it grapples with declining growth and increased costs. It’s transitioning from a social network firm to one dedicated to creating the metaverse, a collection of virtual worlds that may take a decade to develop.
