In a case involving the alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, former JNU student Sharjeel Imam, who is charged in the case, filed a motion with a Delhi court on Monday, alleging a threat to his life.

In the case, which will likely be heard by Special Judge Amitabh Rawat, it was claimed that the Assistant Superintendent of Jail had lately entered his cell with eight to ten other individuals while conducting a search and assaulted the applicant.

Imam is accused of giving divisive comments against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship (Amendment) Act, particularly at Jamia Milia Islamia University in December 2019, which allegedly sparked rioting in the neighbourhood around the university.

Imam has been in judicial jail since January 2020 and is also charged with sedition for his allegedly provocative comments.

Imam was the subject of a charge sheet issued by Delhi Police in the case, which claimed that he provoked the violence in December 2019 by making comments that incited hatred, contempt, and disaffection toward the federal government.
