In a move that stirred significant controversy, Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), ended his oath-taking in the 18th Lok Sabha with the slogan “Jai Palestine” on Tuesday. Owaisi, who was re-elected as the Member of Parliament from the Hyderabad constituency, took his oath in Urdu and concluded with the slogans “Jai Bheem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine.”

This act immediately drew strong reactions from leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who argued that Owaisi’s choice of slogan violated the rules of the House. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy condemned Owaisi’s statement, saying, “The slogan ‘Jai Palestine’ given by AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi in Parliament today is absolutely wrong. This is against the rules of the House. He does not say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ while living in India. People should understand that he does unconstitutional work while living in the country.”

Owaisi, however, defended his actions, asserting that his slogans did not contravene any constitutional provisions. “Everyone is saying a lot of things. I just said ‘Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine.’ How it is against the Constitution, show the provision in the Constitution,” Owaisi responded.

The controversy over Owaisi’s slogan was further compounded when BJP MP Chhatrapal Singh Gangwar added fuel to the fire by ending his oath-taking with the slogan “Jai Hindu Rashtra, Jai Bharat” on the second day of the Parliament session. This declaration led to an uproar in the house, with opposition parties decrying the statement as unconstitutional and in conflict with the secular principles enshrined in the Constitution.

The opposition argued that such statements undermine the secular fabric of the nation and are not in keeping with the spirit of the Constitution. The Congress party and other opposition members demanded that the House take a firm stand against what they termed as divisive and inflammatory rhetoric.

This sequence of events has not only sparked a heated debate on the floor of the Lok Sabha but has also triggered widespread discussions across the country. Many view the exchange of slogans as a reflection of the deepening ideological divides within Indian politics. The juxtaposition of Owaisi’s “Jai Palestine” and Gangwar’s “Jai Hindu Rashtra” underscores the contrasting narratives that different political factions are trying to promote.

Political analysts suggest that these actions are indicative of a larger strategy by both parties to consolidate their respective support bases. Owaisi’s focus on international solidarity and minority rights contrasts sharply with the BJP’s emphasis on nationalistic and Hindu-centric slogans. This incident has thus become a flashpoint, highlighting the growing polarization in Indian politics.

As the Lok Sabha session continues, it remains to be seen how these tensions will play out. The controversy has set the stage for what promises to be a session marked by intense debates and ideological clashes. Observers are keenly watching whether the Speaker will address these contentious slogans and how the political leadership will navigate this complex terrain.

In conclusion, Asaduddin Owaisi’s “Jai Palestine” slogan during the oath-taking ceremony has not only sparked controversy but also brought to the fore the deep-seated ideological divides within Indian politics. The ensuing debate and reactions from various quarters underscore the challenges of maintaining the delicate balance between freedom of expression and adherence to constitutional principles in a diverse and pluralistic society like India.
