Saira Banu, a veteran actress, believes her late husband, actor Dilip Kumar, should be awarded the Bharat Ratna since he is the country’s “Kohinoor.”
On Tuesday evening, Saira Banu attended the Bharat Ratna Dr. Ambedkar Award, handed to Dilip Kumar posthumously by Union Minister Ramdas Athawale. Dilip Kumar passed away last year at the age of 98.
Mr. Athawale said at the occasion that he would ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider granting the Hindi film the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honor.
When asked about it, Saira Banu said to reporters, “Because Dilip Sahab has been our country’s ‘Kohinoor,’ it should happen, God willing. As a result, ‘Kohinoor’ should undoubtedly be awarded the Bharat Ratna.”
Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu married in 1966. The couple appeared in several films together, including “Sagina” and “Gopi.”
The 77-year-old actor was overcome with emotion as he accepted the award.
“This is why I don’t go to any functions because I feel bad, but what can I do?” she replied, tears streaming down her face.
According to Saira Banu, Dilip Kumar continues to support her strongly.
“I have the impression he is still here, watching over me and being with me.” I have no recollection of him. He is with me at all times. I’ll be able to live the rest of my life knowing he’s beside me.”
“I’m not going to believe he isn’t, just to make it easier for me to believe he is,” she added.
