National Girl Child Day is celebrated every year on 24 January in India. This special day is dedicated to all the girl children to create awareness about the rights and challenges faced by the girl child in Indian society. This day highlights the need to eradicate discrimination and violence against girls.
Significance of National Girl Child Day
- National Girl Child Day was first initiated in 2008 by the Ministry of Child and Women Development of India to highlight the importance of empowering women.
- This day is celebrated with organized programmes and awareness campaigns by the Government like Save Girl Child mainly targetting Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and Delhi.
- Every year, the theme of National Girl Child Day is determined by the Government as the primary goal to work in the direction of initiatives aimed at safeguarding and strengthening Women.
- This day marks significant importance due to the anniversary of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBP) Scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 January to address the declining child sex ratio image (CSR).
- This day has two major objectives. Firstly, it highlights the inequalities faced by girls in the country and secondly, to promote awareness about the rights of a girl child and lastly to generate awareness on the importance of Girl’s education, health and nutrition.
- Several activities, seminars and awareness programs are conducted at Colleges, Schools, and community organizations to educate people about gender equality and girl’s rights.
