29th Uranus Moon Discovered by James Webb Space Telescope, Named S/2025 U1

James Webb Space Telescope has Discovered a new Moon Orbiting The planet Uranus. NASA has named it as S/2025 U1, it has a Diameter of 10 Km while Its Characteristics are yet to be known.

Uranus Has 29 Moons, Nasa Confirmed

  • On Aug 19, 2025 Nasa announced that a new moon has been found orbiting the planet Uranus. The James Webb Space Telescope Discovered a tiny natural satellite and surprisingly this one is even smaller than the other. The lead Scientist at SwRI has said that the Moon Might be small but the Discovery is significant in the field.
  • Southwest Research Institute(SwRI) led a Team of Scientists that was Responsible for conducting the Research. As per the researchers, the new moon that has been named S/2025 U1 was actually observed during research on 2 February 2025.

  • The specifications of the 29th Moon of Uranus are yet to be found but NASA informed us that it is even smaller than the other moons with a diameter of 10 km and orbits at a distance of 56,000 kilometers.. The 28th Moon was S/2023 U1 discovered in November 2023 at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.
  • “This Object was spotted in a series of 10 40-minute long-exposure images captures by the Near-Infrared Camera(NIRCam), It’s a small moon but a significant Discovery, which is something that even NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft didn’t see during its flyby nearly 40 years ago.” said the lead scientist of SwRI Maryame El Moutamid.

What is The Planet Uranus Like?

The Planet Uranus Also Nicknamed as The Ice Giant

  • Uranus was discovered in 1781 by Sir William Herschel and was the first one to be discovered with a telescope. Uranus appears as a pale blue-green Planet due to methane gas in its atmosphere absorbing red light. Uranus is comprised on Hydrogen(83%), Helium(15%) and Methane(2%)
  • The Planet Uranus is one of the biggest Planets in our Solar System and is the 7th Planet from the sun. Uranus is 4 times Earth’s diameter and 14.5 times in terms of Mass.
  • Uranus has 13 Faint dark rings. What makes it unique is the 98॰ Tilt and rotates horizontally,One season of Uranus lasts for 21 years, Takes 84 Years to take one rotation but the days are shorter than the earth’s with 17 hours 14 minutes.
  • Spacecraft Voyager 2 Sent in the year 1986, Unravelled the Mysteries of the Planet. Uranus is a Gaseous Ice Giant, coldest along with Neptune. Temperature Goes below 224॰C (-371॰F) Wind speed reaches Up to 900 km/h (560 mph).
  • The Uranus has 29 Moons and 27 of them were named after characters from the works of Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. (Miranda,Oberon, Ariel etc.).
