On Monday, November 24, 2025, President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath ceremony of the 53rd Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He succeeded Justice B.R. Gavai and will serve till February 9, 2027.

- Justice B.R. Gavai has been succeeded by Justice Surya Kant, who became the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, November 24, 2025. The oath ceremony was administered by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. In the presence of prominent leaders, he delivered his pledge in Hindi. He is the first Chief Justice of India from Haryana.
- Justice Surya Kant will serve until his retirement on February 9, 2027. He was born on 10 February 1962 in a middle-class family in Hisar, Haryana. He was born in a middle-class family in Hisar, Haryana. In 1984, he earned his law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak and started his legal practice at the District Court in Hisar.

- In 1985, he shifted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh, and later served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. In May 2019, He was elevated to the Supreme Court. He served on the governing body of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
- Kant has been a part of landmark judgments such as the Abrogation of Article 370, which revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, upholding the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme for the armed forces, and the Pegasus Inquiry, which directed a probe into the use of Pegasus spyware.
- He is the 53rd Chief Justice of India and the first one from the state of Haryana. Previously, the post was held by Justice B.R.Gavai, and he was the second judge from the Scheduled Castes to hold the post.
