Why did Emmanuel Macron wear sunglasses at World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump jokes

On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, during meetings and the much-anticipated speech of the day by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, he wore blue sunglasses to mask a bloodshot/red eye (a subconjunctival haemorrhage) to avoid distracting people from what he had for the people to listen. Donald Trump, the U.S. President, did not spare the occasion to joke about Macron during the meeting.

Donald Trump mocks French President Macron for wearing a Sunglass

World Economic Forum's Annual meeting in Davos officially commenced on January 19, 2026 and is scheduled till January 23, 2026. This summit is for discussing global issues like climate change, geopolitics, Economic growth, sustainability and now Artificial intelligence.

This year's summit was on the theme of "A spirit of Dialogue". On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, during the speeches of the world leaders, President of France, Emmanuel Macron, appeared with his blue sunglasses, which he wore to hide his bloodshot/red eyes (a subconjunctival haemorrhage), which is completely harmless and heals on its own with time. Macron covered his eyes to avoid being distracted from his message at the summit.

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, made a little joke about his "eye of the tiger", which Macron called himself earlier, referencing the Rocky III song, which is a song about determination. During the speech of Trump he raised the incident between what he had to say and said, "I watched him yesterday, with those beautiful sunglasses. What the hell happened?" There is no further explanation, and that's all he said.

Trump has created a board of peace for Gaza, to bring peace, stability and order into the region and protect it from further harm, by looking over its day-to-day internal affairs and supporting the smooth political transition and aspirations of its people. Trump has invited many world leaders to be a part, including President Macron, who reportedly refused the invitation. Trump did not take the rejection in a good manner, and as a response, he threatened to impose 200% tariff on French champagnes and wines that Americans prefer over anything else.

To put pressure on Macron, Trump is looking forward to impose 200% tariff as a penalty; he recently said he expects Macron to be out of office soon because he is not capable enough.
“I’ll put a 200 % tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join,” he also said nobody wants him because he will be out of office very soon.

Mr Donald Trump has a history of treating world leaders like nobodies. For instance, when Ukrainian President Zelenskyy visited the Oval Office, Trump humiliated him in front of the world, and J.D. Vance accompanied him in doing so by asking, "Have you ever said Thank you to America for what it has done?"
