She is the eldest daughter of film director and producer Shomu Mukerji and actress Tanuja. She has a younger sister, Tanishaa Mukerji, who is also an actress. Her parents separated when she was a child. She looked after her maternal grandmother while Tanuja focused on her career. Her father was Bengali, and her mother was Maharashtrian. She actively participated in festivals of each culture. In 1990, Tanuja attempted to launch her in the film industry, but the shooting did not continue.

At the mere age of sixteen, when she debuted with Bekhudi (1992), she was spotted by the writer of the screenplay of the film. She dropped out of school to pursue a career in acting. In the following year she was casted in the the crime thriller Baazigar (1993) alongside Shah Rukh Khan. It was the fourth-highest-grossing movie of the year.
In 1994 she made an appearance in Udhaar ki Zindagi, which did not work well at the box office, but her performance was appreciated and won her the best actress title in the Bengal Film Journalists Association.
Yeh dillagi (1994) alongside Akshaye Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, changed her screen persona, with the audience praising her looks.
In 1995, two of her most successful movies, Karan Arjun and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge, were released. The film won ten Filmfare Awards, including a first Best Actress for Kajol.
In 1999, She married Ajay Devgan at the pinnacle of her career and cut down on the number of movies she signed, to focus on her family.
She took breaks especially after the birth of her children.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) was her last work before taking a break.
She made her comeback in 2006 with Fanaa opposite Aamir Khan. It was a hit and won her best actress at filmfare for her emotionally intense performance.
