The nation on Thursday reported 3,17,532 new cases of Coronavirus. This figure is the highest in 249 days increasing the total number of Covid-19 to 3,82,18,773. The total number of Omicron cases is 9287, as per the data updated by the Union Health Ministry on Thursday.

The daily positivity rate of India was recorded at 16.41 percent which is 3.63 percent higher than the rate on Wednesday, the ministry reported. The active cases right now have gone up to 19,24,051 which is the highest number of infections in 234 days. The death toll has climbed to 4,87,693 with the addition of 491 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours as per the data. 13 states have reported over 10 fatalities. The Union Ministry has mentioned that 70 percent of the total fatalities are due to comorbidities. The active cases are 5.03 percent of the total infections. The ministry said that the recovery rate of patients in India has declined to 93.09 percent.

The genome sequencing for every sample is not possible but experts have stated that the rise in the number of infections is being driven mostly by the latest variant, Omicron.

The COVID tally of the nation crossed the 20 lakh mark on August 7, 2020, crossed the unfortunate threshold of 2 crore cases on May 4, 2021, and quickly crossed the 3 crore mark on June 23, 2021. The daily Covid curve saw a worrying upward trend after declining for the last few days.

India is the second-worst-hit nation at the global level after the United States. 29 states across the nation have reported the new strain of the virus. Maharashtra has the lead in the number of Omicron cases with 1738 cases followed by West Bengal where 1672 people have been infected with the latest strain. Maharashtra recorded 43,697 cases in the past 24 hours which is 10 percent higher than the previous day. The national capital reported 13,785 new Corona cases including 35 fatalities in the past 24 hours. 93,051 new cases were recorded in the active load in the past 24 hours according to the data updated on Thursday morning.

Under the vaccination drive by the government, over 159.67 crore vaccines have been administered to people all over the country. Around 70 percent of the eligible population, have received 2 primary doses of the vaccine, and additional booster shots to the healthcare and frontline workers have been administered as well.
