Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar Jayanti Special: 2 November

Mahendralal Sarkar (CIE) was an Indian doctor. He was the second person to graduate from Calcutta Medical College. He had earned the degree of MD. He was also the founder of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (ICAS).

He was born on November 2, 1833. He was born in Paikpara village of Howrah district in Bengal province. Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar adopted homeopathy despite being trained in allopathy. Mahendralal Sarkar was one of the first famous people to convert to homeopathy as a physician.

Through the journal Calcutta Journal of Medicine, founded by him, he defended the cause of homeopathy as a physician, with great ability. Sarkar gradually established himself as a skilled homeopath and became recognized as an important public figure of Calcutta.

During his career, he treated many notable individuals of the time, including writers Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. From 1867 he began a campaign for a National Science Association because he felt that India needed its own scientific knowledge away from British domination and thus he planned an association that would be funded, run and controlled by native Indians.
