Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran: Anniversary Special 13 September

Major Ramaswami Parameswaran was an officer in the Indian Army. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra (posthumously) for his supreme sacrifice towards the nation during Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka.

Official Citation

On November 25, 1987, when Major Ramaswami Parameswaran was returning from a search operation in Sri Lanka, his convoy was ambushed by a group of militants late at night. Using his presence of mind, he surrounded the terrorists from behind and attacked them, taking them by complete surprise.

During a hand-to-hand fight, a militant shot him in the chest. Undaunted, Major Parameswaran snatched the rifle from the terrorist and shot him. Despite being seriously injured, he continued to give orders and inspire his platoon till his last breath. Five terrorists were killed. Additionally, three rifles and two rocket launchers were also recovered. And the ambush was repulsed.

Major Ramaswami Parameswaran displayed conspicuous gallantry and inspiring leadership and made the supreme sacrifice, for which he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra (posthumously).
