Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis. Many Sri Lankan has moved to India amid the crisis. The refugees came to Tamil Nadu. They moved through the sea route by boat. The refugees said that there was no chance of their survival there resulting in them migrating. The price of day-to-day commodities has hiked.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday assuring them of the continuance of India’s cooperation amid the crisis. As a part of financial assistance to Sri Lanka, India announced to extend a $1 billion line of credit.
"Pleased to call on President @GotabayaR of Sri Lanka. Reviewed various dimensions of our close neighbourly relationship. Assured him of India's continued cooperation and understanding," S Jaishankar said on Twitter.
S Jaishankar reviewed India’s close neighbourly relations with Sri Lanka while talking to President Gotabaya.
Sri Lankan President expressed his gratitude to India’s government for providing its cooperation.
"Met with Indian Foreign Minister @DrSJaishankar today, and I expressed my gratitude to the Government of #India for the invaluable assistance provided recently via the line of credit, on behalf of the people of #lka," President Gotabaya said on Twitter.
S Jaishankar, during his virtual meeting with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, inaugurated the Jaffna Cultural Centre. Jaffna Cultural Centre is constructed by India.
"Thank Prime Minister @PresRajapaksa for his gracious welcome. Our discussions were followed by some notable events: 1. Witnessed the signing of agreement on supporting Buddhist culture and heritage. 2. Virtually toured an ongoing camp in Jaffna on fitting 'Jaipur Foot'.- S Jaishankar tweeted.
