The petitions filed against the Citizenship Amendment Act will be heard in the Supreme Court today. More than 200 petitions have been filed against CAA. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra will hear the case.

What is the demand?
In fact, recently the Central Government had issued a notification announcing the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). However, after the government issued the notification, questions were raised regarding it. After this, the Supreme Court was approached demanding a stay on the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act and more than 200 petitions were filed against it.

Let us inform you that the Supreme Court had recently agreed to consider the demand for a stay on the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Rules, 2024. Last Friday, the Supreme Court had fixed March 19 for hearing in this case.

What is the objection regarding CAA?

In the petition filed by IUML in the Supreme Court, questions have been raised on the notification to implement CAA.
IUML has demanded a stay on the notification.
The petition states that it was not implemented for four and a half years, but notifying it now raises questions on it.
It also says that granting citizenship on the basis of religion in CAA violates the provisions of the Constitution.

What is CAA?

It is noteworthy that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was implemented in the country four years after it was passed by the Parliament. Under this law, it will be easier for non-Muslim refugees coming from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to get Indian citizenship. These include Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian refugees.
