According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees' annual Global Trends Report, about 50 lakh persons in India were internally displaced in 2021 as a result of climate change and calamities (UNHCR).
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, the number of individuals compelled to flee their homes has climbed every year for decades and is now at its highest level since records began. By the end of 2021, the number of people displaced by conflict and violence had risen to nearly 9 crores, an increase of 8% over the previous year's statistic and more than double the figure of ten years ago.
As explained in the report, 89.3 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide by the end of 2021, including 27.1 million refugees, 21.3 million refugees under UNHCR's mandate, 5.8 million Palestine refugees under UNRWA's mandate, 53.2 million internally displaced people, 4.6 million asylum seekers, and 4.4 million Venezuelans displaced abroad.According to the research, China (60 lakhs), the Philippines (57 lakhs), and India (49 lakhs) had the most disaster-related displacements in 2021.
In the opinion of the UNHCR study, 10 crore people were forced from their homes last year owing to violence, food insecurity, human rights violations, the climate crisis, the war in Ukraine, and other factors.
