Indian Army Day

In India, Army Day is celebrated on 15 January every year in the form of parades and other military shows in the National Capital New Delhi as well as in all headquarters. Indian Army Day is also celebrated because Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa became the first Indian Army Chief on this day. This day marks a day to salute the valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country and its citizens.

Origin of Indian Army Day

Army Day is celebrated in recognition of Lieutenant General Kodandera M. Cariappa (later who became Field Marshal) took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Francis Roy Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India on 15 January 1949. The Indian Army was officially established in 1895. However, India got its first Army Chief in 1949.

The Indian Army Day was founded and established by the British on 1 April 1895 but Army Day in India is celebrated on 15 January. The Indian Army basically originated from the forces of East India Company which later became the British Indian Army and after independence, it is eventually known as the National Army.

Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa (28 January 1899 – 15 May 1993) was born in Karnataka in 1899. He was an Indian Military officer and diplomat. He led Indian forces on the western front during the Indo-Pakistani war of 1947. In 1949, he was appointed the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. He is one of only two Indian army officers to hold the five star rank of field marshal on 14 January 1986; the other being Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in January 1973.

Significance of Indian Army Day 

Army Day is celebrated at all Army Command Headquarters. This day is meant to honor all the soldiers of the Indian Army who selflessly serve the country and set the biggest example of the Brotherhood. A day to salute all those brave fighters who gave up everything including their lives to protect their motherland in order to maintain the integrity of the nation.

This day is celebrated all across the country but the main Army Day parade is conducted in Cariappa parade ground in Delhi cantonment. Gallantry awards and Sena medals are also awarded on this day.
