“Who Are You To Re-Imagine?” is how AR Rahman responds to the remix culture

Currently promoting Mani Ratnam's movie Ponniyin Selvan, AR Rahman recently discussed the remix culture and criticized it as perverted. When questioned about his opinions on other composers remixing his songs in an interview with India Today, AR Rahman responded, "It becomes more warped the more I watch. The composer's original aim is perverted. I'm reimagining, people say. You are to reimagine who? I also take great care not to steal other people's ideas. You must show respect, and I believe some ambiguity has to be resolved."
AR Rahman also discussed his approach to producers' and directors' demands to remake and remix his songs.

He stated: "We recently held the Telugu music premiere, and the producers noted that since all of Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman's songs now undergo digital mastering, they sound brand-new. Everyone recognizes that trait as being there in it. Therefore, I must reconstruct it if I have to do it. People take permission, of course, but you cannot take something recently created and remake it. It feels strange."

Neha Kakkar recently made news for her unpopular remix of Falguni Pathak's song O Sajna.

As the soundtrack composer for Mani Ratnam's 2022 film Roja, AR Rahman launched his professional career. The two have reunited for the historical play Ponniyin Selvan 1 thirty years later. The movie,  directed by Mani Ratnam, stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Trisha, Karthi, and Jayam Ravi in the lead roles.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 will release on September 30.
