A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) asking for instructions to declare Sanskrit the national language was rejected by the Supreme Court on Friday.
The appropriate place for bringing up the issue is Parliament, not the court, according to a panel comprising Justices M R Shah and Krishna Murari.
"Why do we need to provide notice? We may agree with your viewpoints, but Parliament is the proper venue for this discussion. A language cannot be declared a national language by a writ delivered to Parliament, "The bench noted as it rejected the argument.
The supreme court gave the petitioner freedom to make the proper representations to the relevant authorities.
