Paroxysmal Nocturnal Dyspnea (PND)

People with heart failure may have severe shortness of breath at night, known as paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea. This usually happens a few hours after falling asleep and may be accompanied by anxiety and a strong urge to sit or stand.

Difficulty Breathing (Orthopenia)

One of the most common symptoms of heart failure is difficulty breathing during sleep. In this problem, one suddenly experiences difficulty in breathing while lying down. In such a situation, you can take the help of a pillow to breathe comfortably or you may need to sit straight. This condition is known as orthopnea.

Fast Heartbeat (Tachycardia)

Heart failure can sometimes cause an irregular or fast heartbeat, especially during sleep. A person may wake up from sleep due to the rapid heartbeat.

Sudden Awakening

In severe cases of heart failure, the person may experience sudden sinking, chest pain, or a sudden awakening from sleep due to a feeling of doom. If you also have this problem often, contact your doctor immediately.

Cough and Wheeze

Fluid accumulation in the lungs can cause coughing and wheezing, especially during the night. Along with this, foamy, pink colored sputum may also appear.
