To set the dates for the election of the new party president, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will convene on Sunday. The meeting will take place against the backdrop of party elder Ghulam Nabi Azad resigning on Friday and writing a critical letter to the party's acting president Sonia Gandhi.
According to reports, some G-23 group members met on Saturday at Azad's residence in Delhi to discuss party reforms that they had requested in a letter to Sonia Gandhi. The letter is thought to have been written by Azad. At 3:30 pm, Sonia Gandhi will virtually preside over the CWC meeting. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Sonia Gandhi will all participate in the CWC meeting remotely while Sonia Gandhi is travelling for medical examinations.
According to a PTI report, the party's attention on the September 7 launch of the "Bharat Jodo Yatra" from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and certain state units failing to fulfil requirements will likely cause the election of the Congress president to be postponed by a few weeks.
As a result of rumours that Rahul Gandhi has declined to take over as party leader, the names of various party veterans, including Rajasthan's chief minister Ashok Gehlot, have been mentioned as potential candidates for the position of president. The situation, though, remains tense. Gehlot stated on Wednesday that last-minute efforts would be made to urge Rahul Gandhi to retake control of the party.
