Vijay Dashami, also known as Dussehra, is a major festival celebrated in India. Vijay Dashami holds a special significance for Indians as it symbolizes the victory of good over evil, truth over falsehood. It is believed that on this day Lord Shri Ram killed Ravana and freed the earth from the atrocities of Ravana.

Story of Vijay Dashami

The historical and mythological significance of Vijay Dashami revolves around various legends and stories, the most famous of which is the war between Lord Shri Ram and the demon king Ravana. According to the Hindu epic, Ramayana, Lord Shri Ram’s wife Sitaji was abducted by Ravana. Lord Shri Ram, with the help of his army of monkeys, built a bridge over the sea and freed Mother Janaki while fighting Ravana’s army. In this context, Vijay Dashami is celebrated every year to commemorate the victory of good over evil.

Ramlila Performance: One of the most integral aspects of Vijay Dashami celebrations is the performance of “Ramlila”, a dramatic depiction of key events from the Ramayana. These elaborate plays are staged in towns and villages across India. Ramlila performances are an important part of the cultural and religious fabric of India.

Effigy Burning: In many parts of India, effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna and son Meghnad are burnt. These tall effigies are filled with firecrackers and set on fire, symbolizing the destruction of evil forces.

Vijaya Dashami Procession: In some areas, processions are organized with images of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman which are carried on ornate chariots. Devotees join these processions.

Message of Vijay Dashami

Beyond the religious and mythological aspects, Vijay Dashami carries a deep universal message. It reminds us that no matter how formidable evil may seem, it can be defeated by courage, righteousness, and determination. This festival encourages people to stand for what is right even in adverse circumstances.
