According to Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Motorways, the government is trying to build solar-powered electrified highways that would make it easier for buses and heavy-duty vehicles to charge.
Speaking at a gathering sponsored by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Mr. Gadkari reaffirmed the government's intention to build an electric public transportation system in India.
The development of electric roads that will be powered by solar energy would enable the charging of heavy-duty trucks and buses while they are in motion, the official added. "The government is aggressively promoting solar and wind energy-based charging mechanisms for electric mobility.
In general, an electric highway is a route that provides power to moving cars, including through overhead power lines.
According to Mr. Gadkari, the government is also promoting toll booths to use solar energy.
The minister said the transportation ministry has created additional alignments and performed route optimization activities along important routes.
Gadkari stressed the need for a well-developed infrastructure, saying, "We are building 26 greenfield expressways." This encourages the growth of new enterprises and jobs.
He said that implementing the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan will speed up project approval and lower logistical expenses.
