Biography of Ramanand Sagar

Ramanand Sagar was born on December 29, 1917. He was born in Lahore. Her name in childhood was Chandramouli Chopra. His maternal grandmother adopted him in his childhood itself. After adoption, her maternal grandmother changed Chandramouli Chopra’s name to ‘Ramanand Sagar’. After the death of his mother who gave birth to him, his father remarried and gave birth to Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who is today a well-known director in the film industry.

Ramanand Sagar’s childhood was spent in extreme poverty. To complete his studies, he worked as a peon, cleaning trucks, selling soap etc.

Education and Writing

He received his higher education from Punjab University, Lahore. He was a gold medalist in Sanskrit and Persian from Punjab University in 1942. Ramanand Sagar became interested in writing since his college days. He was also the editor of the newspaper “Daily Milap”.

After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, he settled in Mumbai, India. He wrote his autobiography “And humanity died” on Partition, which was in Hindi and Urdu languages.

Career in entertainment world

After coming to Mumbai, he joined the cinema world, where he directed and produced many films and many television programs and serials. However, his Bollywood career began in 1932 as a clapper in the silent film ‘Raiders of the Rail Road’.

In the year 1950, he established his own film production company named ‘Sagar Art Private Limited’. Later, under the banner of ‘Sagar Art Pvt Ltd’, he made films like ‘Zindagi’ (1964), ‘Aarzoo’ (1965), ‘Aankhen’ (1968), ‘Charas’ (1976), ‘Bhagwat’ (1980), and ‘ Directed and produced several Bollywood films like ‘Salma’ (1985).

Got fame from “Ramayana” – Ramanand Sagar Ramayan

Ramanand Sagar got the most fame from the TV serial ‘Ramayana’ based on the life and character of Lord Shri Ram. According to the BBC, “People used to wait for ‘Ramayana’ very spiritually, after taking bath on Sunday morning, after watching the television, they would eagerly wait for ‘Ramayana’ and people from every village and locality would flock to each and every television set. Was. Drivers of buses and trucks would brake their vehicles and get glued to the television installed in some dhaba to watch ‘Ramayana’. At that time only ‘Ramayana’ was shown on railway platforms and airports.” Its popularity can be gauged from the fact that the serial series was initially envisioned to run for 52 episodes of 45 minutes each, but due to popular demand, it was extended three times, ultimately ending after 78 episodes.

After the serial “Ramayana”, Ramanand Sagar produced many TV serials based on Indian folk traditions and folk tales. These include very popular serials like Vikram Aur Betal, Grandfather’s Stories, Ramayana, Shri Krishna, Alif Laila and Jai Ganga Maiya, etc.

Death

He was awarded ‘Padma Shri’ by the Government of India in the year 2000 for his contribution to TV cinema. His health deteriorated with age and finally he breathed his last on December 12, 2005 at the age of 88.
