Coronavirus updates in the nation

India has reported 2,64,202 fresh Covid cases in the past 24 hours which is 6.7 percent higher than the previous day. It is also the highest number of infections in the past 239 days, as reported by the Ministry of Health and Family welfare on Friday morning.

The Omicron cases have also risen by 4.83 percent since Thursday. New 265 Omicron cases were reported overall taking the total tally of the Omicron variant to 5753 all over the country. The number of deaths reported is 315 which makes it the third consecutive day when the death toll is over 300. The overall death toll has gone up to 4,85,350 and the fatality rate of the cases was recorded at 1.33 percent.

India has reported 1,09,345 recoveries in the past 24 hours taking the total number of recovered people to 3,48,24,706. The active cases of India are now at 12,72,073 which is 3.48 percent of the total cases. The national recovery rate has declined further to 95.20 percent as per the reports by the data updated by the Union Ministry. The current positivity rate in the country is 14.78 percent and the weekly rate is at 11.83 percent.

Of the new cases added in the past 24 hours, Maharashtra has recorded 46,406 cases which is the highest by any state. The national capital reported 28,867 cases. The state of Karnataka has reported 25,005 cases. Tamil Nadu reported 20,911, West Bengal reported 23,467 and Kerala has reported 13,468 cases in the past 24 hours as per the data.

The cumulative doses of vaccines administered in the nation so far under the COVID-19 vaccination drive are more than 155 crores so far. There is a lot of unused stock of vaccines that is lying with the states and union territories. The WHO is continuously updating the vaccine drive and the use of additional treatments against the virus.

The restrictions in many states have been extended up to January 31. The exams have been postponed and the educational institutions all over the country have been closed off in the wake of the rise in the cases. Hopefully, the numbers will recede by the end of this month. Taking precautionary measures is the best bet to wade off the virus and to halt the spread at this point.
