Govt proposes Ban on online money gaming, Industry in Shock

A bill is to be proposed by the legislation to put a ban on online money gaming. The ban is to cut 200,000 jobs in India. Top 3 companies write to HM Amit Shah to reconsider.

Centre to Likely put a ban on online money games

  • The Central Government is to put a ban on online Money yielding games in order to protect Innocent users from potential predators and Scams. There have been Numerous cases of scams in India ranging across all generations from kids to adults. The proposed ban is to outlaw any company that associates with online money making games. Puts a ban on Promoting such apps, advertisements on tv and hoardings.
  • “The immersive and addictive nature of online games, particularly with monetary incentives, has led to significant mental health issues among users — especially children, adolescents and young adults. Clinical evidence and field studies have shown a rise in anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and behavioural problems linked to prolonged gaming.” MeitY claimed.
  • The Online Money gaming Industry which is at the moment thriving more than ever left in shock and sheer bewilderment on the information. Following the announcement the top 3 bodies in the industry wrote to the union home minister Amit Shah to reconsider their plan.
  • The letter by three bodies back the top 3 companies Gameskraft-backed All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), Dream11-backed Federation of India Fantasy Sports (FIFS), and Games24x7-backed E-Gaming Federation (EGF), that addressed how the outlawing this industry can lead to repercussions. “A blanket prohibition would strike a death knell for the legitimate, job-creating industry, and would cause serious harm to Indian users and citizens.”

Ban likely to layoff 200000 employees and create illegal chains

  • Popular Platforms such as Dream11, Gameskraft’s Rummyculture, Games24x7’s MyCircle are promoted by celebrities. The bodies writing to the Home Minister stated the possible dangers and upheaval in societies due to job cuts. Currently, The industry employs over 2 lakh. The unemployment rate which is already high in the country could lead to alarming consequences.
  • Banning certain services only makes it thrive even more, The ban will create illegal networks of Gambling. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, will put the operators into jail for three years or more and fine up to ₹10 lakh.

Many incidents of Online gaming scams have been registered such as 18 crore online gaming scam in kharar, Three students in hyderabad fell into debt and digital arrest, 13 year old committed suicide in indore after losing ₹2800 and so many other.If the bill passes, the Ban is to prohibit all the online money gaming related advertisements and hoardings in the country and strict rules may be implemented to ensure that no bank processes such transactions.
