Donald Trump speaks to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on a phone call, further escalating tensions

US President Donald Trump revealed he spoke with the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and gave him an ultimatum to resign from his post, with him even offering a safe passage for his family and several key allies, but Maduro refused.

Nicolás Maduro rejects Donald Trump’s offer

  • On Nov 30, US President Donald Trump revealed that he had engaged in a phone call with the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, but did not disclose all the details of it. According to various sources, the phone call was not productive and only escalated the tensions between the two leaders after Nicolás Maduro refused to accept Donald Trump’s offer.
  • Donald Trump refuses to share whether the call was a success or a failure, “I wouldn’t call it went well or badly, it was a phone call”. Apart from political interests, they discussed the possibility of a face-to-face meeting in future. Trump even made a shocking offer by allowing Maduro, his wife, son and key allies to escape the country to Russia or somewhere else revealed by Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin.
  • Trump said, “You can save yourself and those closest to you, but you must leave the country now”, only if Maduro agrees to resign immediately, but Maduro refused to accept any of it and made his own demands to Trump, such as protection from possible prosecution and keeping control of the armed forces, but only escalated the tensions between the two, and no demands were met.
  • On Monday, Maduro addressed his supporters and said they don’t want a slave peace “We want peace, but peace with sovereignty, equality, freedom! We do not want a slave’s peace, nor the peace of colonies!” The US had first carried out a strike on an alleged drug boat on September 2; since then, 20 more were struck down, killing over 80 people. Trump has allowed the CIA to intervene.
  • The Trump administration has identified Cartel de los Soles as a terrorist group, and President Nicolás Maduro as its leader. Maduro has constantly stressed the US’s intention to initiate a war with Venezuela, and it does seem like the war might be justified as a way to counter drug trafficking.
