Several Videos have surfaced from Russia’s Kamchatka which is currently affected by the earthquake. People hiding in shelters, building shaking and infrastructure damages have social media users on chokehold. Russia and Japan are on alert as the Pacific ocean Tsunami hits the coasts with nearby places such Alaska, Hawaii taking precautions.
On Wednesday, A strong Earthquake with 8.8 magnitude hit the Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula Igniting the Pacific Ocean tsunami warning. The alarming Tsunami can hit the coast of Russia and Japan within the next 3 hours.
The Earthquake took place at 23:24 PST (11:24 UTC) With a magnitude of 8.8 and a depth of 19 km. The epicenter was 85 Miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It is of Megathrust type followed by a series of aftershocks, measuring 6.0 In magnitude.
The videos on social media showcase horrific effects of earthquakes as the buildings shake violently with heavy damages being constantly reported to the authorities. Network and internet interruptions are reported due to the structural damages. Over 2700+ people evacuated with no serious injuries.
"Everyone was evacuated. There was enough time, a whole hour. So everyone was evacuated, all the people are in the tsunami safety zone," said Mayor Alexander Ovsyannikov
In Japan, a massive Tsunami was detected near Hokkaido after an earthquake hit Kamchatka.
Residents in the area have been strictly advised to stay on elevated platforms. Trains and flights have been cancelled with travel advisory issued by the concerned agencies.
Hawaiian officials have turned tsunami alerts into advisories, as the effect has reduced according to officials people were told to return to their homes.
Alerts have been issued in countries like Canada, Ecuador, Indonesia, Peru, Colombia. As tsunami waves are expected to touch the shores in the following hours.
According to the US Geological Survey, this was one of the strongest earthquakes ever.
The Pacific Ocean falls into the “Ring of Fire”, a region known for high seismic and volcanic activity. Major tsunamis have taken place in the region such as 2004 Indian Ocean which was felt in pacific region as well claimed lives and people who were displaced, 2011 Japan Tsunami and 1952 Kamchatka Tsunami.
