India to launch its domestic smartphone brands? India to launch its domestic smartphone brands?

The Indian government has announced plans to support Indian smartphone brands, and it is the first time the Indian government has revealed such plans. Union Electronics & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 in Davos.

"India ready to support Indian smartphone brands"

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, which begun from 19 January, world leaders gathered to discuss topics like climate change, technology, sustainability, geopolitics and more. India's Union Minister of Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw spoke about India's plan to dominate the technological sphere with Indian smartphone brands.

He said briefly that India will be eyeing to enter and dominate the mobile market with Indian smartphone brands, which will emerge within the next 12-18 months, roughly by mid-2027. He revealed that the government has finished the foundation work for its plan, like supply chain, design ecosystem, policy support, etc., and said the launch of such smartphones will be done soon as the "Global-brands" are ready.

India does not have many domestic brands that produce and sell smartphones, but there are some brands that are emerging, like Indkal’s Wobble One, and there are certain startups that are headed in the direction of popularising Indian brands.

“Now that we have a very substantial electronics ecosystem in our country, this is the time when we will be going for getting our own Indian brands in mobile phones. Very soon, maybe another one year from now, or maybe max 18 months from now, we should have our own Indian brands coming out.” Vaishnaw said at WEF, Davos.
