Divya Deshmukh becomes FIDE Women’s World Cup champion, PM Modi congratulates

Divya Deshmukh wins the Women’s World Cup on Monday

Divya Deshmukh defeats Koneru Humpy in the All-Indian final of the women’s World Cup championship. 

In the rapid tiebreaks, Humpy lost the title by a slim margin, ending up 1st runner-up. 

Divya, 19 years old, used black pieces in the second rapid tiebreaker to win over the humpy 38-year-old in Batumi, Georgia. 

The intense classical chess, which lasted 2 days, resulted in a draw. For which tiebreakers were conducted. The first rapid tie-breaker led to a draw again, while in the second one, Divya won. 

Divya received the title of fourth woman grandmaster and 88th in the country. 

"I need time to process it. I believe it was fate that I earned the GM title in this manner. Before this tournament, I didn't even have one norm. It means a lot. There's still much to be achieved. I'm hoping this is just the start." Said Divya 

PM Narendra Modi congratulated her on his social media handle.
