Nepal’s Government Bans Popular Social Media Platforms citing non-compliance with registration rules, public says the step taken is an effort towards controlling freedom of speech and also disconnecting people from the world.
Nepal Bans Youtube, X , Facebook and other social media platforms
- On Thursday (4th September 2025) Nepal banned all the Prominent Social media platforms, the reason for taking such a step was due to the lapse in meeting the deadline set by the government.
- Ministry of communication and Information technology issues a notice declaring the ban “The Ministry has ordered the Nepal Telecommunication authority to make inactive all non-registered social media sites until they are registered”
- According to the spokesperson of the ministry gajendra thakur, they set a deadline on August 28 for a week so that the social media platforms can register themselves before the laid timeframe. However, none of the social media platforms approached on time which led to the ban
- As per the advocates of freedom of speech, this act was premeditated and the conditions laid by the government to supervise and control the lives of the users over the social media must have been extremely Intrusive and must have contradicted with the values of social media platforms therefore, none of them agreed to register.
- Various organisations and activists have raised their voices against the ban and echoed their concern. The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) expressed speaking to news agency PTI “The government’s move to ban social media sites without giving alternatives not only restricts freedom of expression and press freedom but it also affects the right to information guaranteed by the constitution”
- Prime Minister K.P Sharma Oli was reinstated on 15 July 2024 this is oli's fourth term. There have been geopolitical tensions between Nepal and India, leading to the territorial dispute over lipulekh pass and opposed the commencement of trade between india and china through this route.
