Suspension of Postal Services From 25 August, With Some Conditions

  • On 23 August 2025, The Department of Posts Announced that all the Postal Services to the United States are going to be suspended from 25 Aug(Monday).The Decision Has Been Taken in the View of the Tariffs Imposed on India. The Executive order No.14324, by the US Administration on July 30, To pull out the duty-free de minimis Exemption for goods valued up to $800.
  • This Decision can be as a Step Taken as a response to the India-US Trade Conflicts. Donald Trump the president of the United States imposed a 25%Tariff on India with an additional 25% Tariff as a Penalty for buying Russian Oil. When The US Imports Uranium and other Materials from Russia Itself.
  • In The official Statement the department of posts said “all international postal items destined for the USA, regardless of their value, shall be subject to customs duties as per the country-specific International Emergency Economic Power Act (IEEPA) tariff framework.” However, it added that gift items worth up to USD 100 will continue to remain exempt.”

  • The Transport carriers associated with the international postal network of other “qualified parties” approved by US customs and border protection (CBP) are directed to collect and remit duties.Due to the lack of staff the US Carriers Told the Indian authorities that they will not be able to accept Packages.

What to do if already Sent the Packages? 

  • “In view of the above, the Department of Posts has decided to temporarily suspend booking of all types of postal articles destined for the USA with effect from 25th August, 2025, except letters/documents and gift items up to USD 100 in value,” the statement said.
  • If customers had already sent their packages they are asked to seek a refund. “closely monitoring the evolving situation in coordination with all stakeholders, and every effort is being made to normalize services at the earliest possible opportunity.”

France’s La poste and Germany's DHL took similar steps due to Trump's tariff. After the abrupt announcement on August 15, they said "left European postal services with an extremely limited timeframe to get prepared."
