IAS Santosh Verma bashed for “Until a Brahmin donates a daughter” comment
- A senior IAS officer, Santosh Verma, posted in Madhya Pradesh, who is apparently the state president of Anusuchit Jati-Janjati Adhikari Karmachari Sangh (AJJASKS) appeared in an event held in Ambedkar Maidan in Bhopal, spoke about the reservations, during which he made an inappropriate comment, which hurt the sentiments of the Brahmin community, and Brahmin organisations demanded strict legal action against him.
- While speaking on the premise of granting the reservations, he bluntly said, “Until a Brahmin donates a daughter for my son or has a relationship with him, reservations should continue.”IAS Santosh Verma later clarified his comment and said that he meant equality between the communities.
- The comment gained criticism from prominent Brahmin organisations like the All India Brahmin Society. Pushpendra Mishra, the state president of the organisation, demanded an immediate FIR against IAS Santosh Verma. He said, “We demand an immediate FIR against the officer for his highly indecent remarks about Brahmin daughters. If no FIR is registered against him, the entire Brahmin samaj will resort to state-wide protest,”
- Speaking to ANI, He said, "My aim was not to create a political uproar. At a meeting of the state unit of AJJAKS, one agenda item for discussion was that reservations should be based on economic grounds, not religious basis. On this subject, I had said that if I am financially independent and not socially backward anymore, then my children should receive 'roti-beti' treatment from society. I don't have ill will against any community.”
- He continued to clarify his stance by saying, “I did not want to hurt women's sentiments. I express regret if I have hurt anyone. But some people propagated only a portion of what I had said. Those who have fanned this controversy have taken only one line from the speech I had made."
- Previously, he allegedly forged a court order by faking the signatures of a special court judge to do away with a criminal court case from a woman who claimed he had assaulted her. He was arrested in 2022 after an FIR by the judge himself.
